Wal-Mart Gives $100 Gift Cards to BlackBerry Buyers

From November 14 (Saturday) to November 20 (Friday), Wal-Mart will be giving away $100 gift cards to anyone who buys a BlackBerry phone from a Wal-Mart store.

When you buy your BlackBerry and sign a two-year contract with Verizon Wireless, AT&T, T-Mobile, or Sprint, you’ll get a gift card to spend on any purchase after the phone. According to Greg Hall, Wal-Mart’s vice president of Media Services, “We know customers are very focused on value, and we have promised each week to deliver new savings to help them stretch their dollars this holiday season.”

With the holiday season coming up, Wal-Mart’s strategy isn’t just to get people to buy phones from their stores. They want people to have a little bit of extra spending money for their wallets this season.

Apple to Launch iPhone for Verizon in 2010

For a long time there have been rumors floating around that Apple is developing an iPhone to distribute to Verizon. Well, according to AppleInsider, the phone is well into development, and is expected to be released as early as the third quarter of 2010.

Apple wants to sell a single model to all carriers around the globe—but, its primary focus was to create a device that would be compatible with Verizon Wireless in the U.S. AppleInsider says that “the new ‘worldmode’ iPhone will gain compatibility with CDMA2000 networks (including Verizon’s US network, which is currently incompatible with existing iPhone models) while retaining compatibility with UMTS 3G networks globally using a new hybrid chip produced by Qualcomm.”

The device in development is also said to be slightly smaller than the current iPhone, measuring at 2.8” instead of 3.5”. No word on whether or not it’ll be thinner, though. I guess we’ll find out!

BlackBerry Storm 2 Out Now

A little over a year after the BlackBerry Storm was released, the second generation Storm has arrived. On October 28, the Storm 2 hit the stores with the promise of a lot of updated features.

The new phone will significantly improve upon the touch-screen feature that the original Storm currently has. It will now, supposedly, be much easier to click on the screen—the user will not have to press quite as hard in order to get a response from the phone.

The Storm 2 will also feature higher resolution displays, a 3.2 megapixel camera, and more memory (256 flash, 2G onboard), built-in GPS, BlackBerry OS 5, as well as other updated features—including both hardware and software. The best upgrade, in my opinion, is that the Storm 2 will have Wi-Fi capability.

As for pricing, according to PC World, the phone will be sold for “$280 when you sign a two-year service contract with Verizon Wireless. Verizon is offering a $100 mail-in rebate, which knocks the price down to $180, but that rebate comes in the form of a Visa debit card, not an actual check.”

AT&T and T-Mobile Announce BlackBerry Bold 9700

On October 21, AT&T and T-Mobile announced the development of a new BlackBerry smartphone: the BlackBerry Bold 9700. The new device is a slimmer version of the BlackBerry Bold 9000 and offers a different look and a less chunky body than its predecessor.

The Bold 9700 will be the first BlackBerry that T-Mobile supports. According to PC Mag, the “9700 has a 624-MHz processor, 256 Mbytes of memory, a 3.2-Megapixel camera, a 3.5-mm headset jack and an unusually sharp, bright 360-by-480 display.” The phone will also use the new BlackBerry 5.0 OS, and the system is said to have a faster-running web browser than other BlackBerry devices.

Both AT&T and T-Mobile versions will offer 3G coverage as well as Wi-Fi capability. T-Mobile will go one step further and offer an unlimited amount of calling over the Wi-Fi network (for an extra $10 per month). The phone is said to be a great, powerful upgrade for either the Bold 9000 (on AT&T) or the Curve.

Windows 7 Out Thursday

Microsoft has an answer to Apple’s Snow Leopard OSX. Even though Windows Vista was released in just 2007 (to retail), there is a new upgrade: Windows 7.

Windows 7 will be available this Thursday, October 22 in stores. For students the upgrade could cost as little as $29 (sound familiar?). Otherwise, the operating system upgrade will run you from $50-$200. Judging by reviews and screenshots of Windows 7, Microsoft seems to be focusing on precision and focus instead of newer features (like in Vista).
