Woman Arrested After Using “Poke” Feature on Facebook

You didn’t read that wrong. A woman in Hendersonville, Tennessee was arrested on September 25th for “poking” someone on Facebook.

I guess it runs a little deeper than that, though. The woman contacted another woman from whom she was ordered (by the courts) to stay away. She was not allowed to contact this woman in any fashion, which included: “no telephoning, contacting or otherwise communicating with the petitioner.” Well, apparently “poking” via Facebook violated the court order.

Apple to Launch Snow Leopard OSX on Friday

Apple has come out with a new operating system, called “Snow Leopard” (which happens to be my favorite animal). It is an upgrade to the already-popular and successful Apple Leopard OS, and starts at just $29, and it launches THIS FRIDAY! Apple wants all of its users to be able to upgrade to the Snow Leopard OS from the Leopard, which is why its starting price is so low.

The OS upgrade is said to be “Better. Faster. Easier.” Although, how can it get much easier than a Mac already? Because of the hype and the anticipation for the product, analysts are hinting that Apple will sell upwards of 3 million copies by the end of September (potentially up to 5 million).

The upgrade consists of standard stability and performance improvements, but will also feature better use of disk space: Snow Leopard is roughly half the size of Leopard, which will allow users (who upgrade to Snow Leopard OS) to reclaim 7GB of space.

Get ready for the release of Snow Leopard on Friday, August 28!

Harry Potter and the Half Blood Prince Opens TODAY!

The wait is FINALLY over! The release of the new movie, Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince, had been set for November 21, 2008, but then on August 14, 2008, Warner Brothers released a statement saying that HBP would not open until July 2009. What a major disappointment. People everywhere were forced to see Twilight instead, which was not an even trade. But after nearly 8 long months of extra anticipation, we can finally rush out and see the film.

I was one of those people who stood in the long lines at a bookstore to get the books at exactly midnight; no way was I going to wait until the stores opened at 10:00AM! I would then proceed to read non-stop until I was finished with the book. What better way is there to experience Harry Potter? Once you start reading those books, you have a hard time putting them down. Don’t get me wrong, it’s a little tough to go back and re-read the first or second book after you have completed the series, considering how much darker and more interesting they get as they progress; but isn’t it still just as fun to look back and find things that you may have missed in the beginning that are all tied up in a neat little bow by the end of book 7?

On the Memorial Service for Michael Jackson

Yesterday was the public memorial service for Michael Jackson at the Staples Center in Los Angeles.  Over 1.5 million people registered for the chance to get a ticket (though the site itself had over 500 million hits), but only 11,000 were actually awarded a seat.

People all over the world were watching the service on TV and on the internet; everyone was brought together for one day to celebrate the life of one of the greatest performers of all time (if not the greatest), so it was only fitting that he was memorialized with a concert-like show.

The event itself included star-studded speeches and performances to pay tribute to their friend and colleague; many played songs written and performed by Jackson himself.  Performances were made by the Andrae Crouch Choir (“Soon and Very Soon”), Mariah Carey and Trey Lorenz (“I’ll Be There”), Lionel Richie (“Jesus is Love”), Stevie Wonder (“Never Dreamed You’d Leave in Summer”), Jennifer Hudson (“Will You Be There”), John Mayer (“Human Nature”), Jermaine Jackson (“Smile”), Usher (“Gone Too Soon”), Shaheen Jafargholi (“Who’s Loving You”), and finally a group of various people who performed a medley of “We Are the World” and “Heal the World.”

Medley: “We Are the World” and “Heal the World”

All the performances were genuine and filled with emotion—very appropriate for the event.  Everyone came to pay the greatest tribute possible to Michael Jackson and to highlight and reflect upon some of his best qualities, both as an artist and as a person.  He was always adamant about expressing his humanity, and appreciated those who recognized him as a human first, and as a famous singer second.

Obama Interrupted by Duck Ringtone

Quacked Out: Awkward Ringtone Moment #67

In the middle of a press conference on fairness and equality in America, a duck began to quack, interrupting President Obama’s speech.  No, there was not a mallard infiltration in the White House– it was someone’s ringtone. The president stopped talking and joked about the duck, asking, “Where do you guys get these ringtones, by the way?” before returning to his speech. The answer to that question is obvious since, in fact, SendMe Mobile offers a wide selection of duck-related ringtones, including some favorites such as “Disco Duck” and “Three Little Ducks.”

If this isn’t the purest definition of an awkward ringtone moment, I don’t know what is!  Just think about what it would be like if all moments like these could be caught on film.  Don’t forget, there is still time to submit your entry to SendMe Mobile’s Awkward Ringtone Moment Contest!  All entries must be submitted by July 20, 2009 at 6:00PM EST.
