Broken Bells: A Brief Profile

Ever heard of the band Broken Bells? I’ve recently discovered them, and I was relieved to find out that they’ve only been around for about 10 months.

It’s a duo of guys who had previously been associated with other acts: Brian Burton (aka Danger Mouse) and James Mercer, who is/was the lead singer and guitarist for The Shins. They met at a Danish music festival back in 2004 and clicked ever since.

Their debut album, Broken Bells, was released on March 9, 2010 in the United States and Canada, and was actually pretty well-received, peaking at #7 on the Billboard 200.  It seems, though, that the band is starting to pick up speed these days.  I’ve seen their music floating around the internet over the past couple of weeks, and I have to say, I like what I’m seeing and hearing.

I’m listening to the album and it absolutely sounds like an exact mixture of both of them.  You can hear a little bit of The Shins in there, but not so much that they seem identical.  Their first single, “The High Road,” was passed around the internet back in December to fans and subscribers as a free download, so it ended up reaching as high as #21 on the Billboard U.S. Rock charts.

The current single, “The Ghost Inside,” is equally good.  It’s so unique that I’m not sure I can put a label on it, in terms of genre.  You just have to check it out, and the rest of their music, too!  I’m excited to see more from them.
