Fall TV: Drama
Last week I wrote about a few comedy-TV shows that are premiering soon. Now it’s time for Drama! Looking back on all the TV shows I watch, I actually had a hard time coming up with more than two comedy shows that I like/watch. It’s strange to think that about 75% of what I watch is drama, but there you have it.
Dexter is my favorite show on television right now. It’s smart, funny, crazy, extremely well-acted, and just all-around an amazing show. Personally I think the TV show is actually better than the books (which is really rare). Michael C. Hall is brilliant, the story lines are great, and because it’s on Showtime we don’t miss out on any gory details! Catch the premiere on September 27!
House is also great TV. It’s no wonder Hugh Laurie is (almost) the highest paid actor on TV (right behind Keifer Sutherland of 24). Even though there seem to be a lot of medical and crime-scene-type shows on right now, House is unique because of the title character. He is sarcastic and bitter but brilliant. It makes for entertaining television. Season 6 began on September 21!
The Mentalist is still a new show: it will be starting its second season on September 24. Aussie Simon Baker plays Patrick Jane, a quiet but incredibly intelligent consultant for the state police (California). He assists in criminal cases that are unique to state lines and jurisdictions. Upfront it seems like just another crime drama, but when you actually watch it you see that it’s really clever and witty. Jane’s arrogance is obnoxious and amusing at the same time. His character and the show remind me of a combination of House and Psych.
