In The Works: Beach Boys Musical
The biggest question (in my mind, at least): will it be more like That Thing You Do! or will it be like Mamma Mia? What’s the difference, you ask? Let me break it down for you.
So Fox 2000 Pictures has been pitched an idea about a musical involving The Beach Boys and their biggest hits. The studio subsequently purchased the rights to The Beach Boys’ music catalog. We therefore know that a movie of some sort will be made. Here are the two options:
That Thing You Do! is a movie about the rise and fall of the Oneders (pronounced “Wonders” but hilariously mispronounced throughout the movie as the “Oh-Need-Ers”). Rumor has it that the film is very, very loosely based on the Beatles. I say very loosely because the Oneders only had one big hit. The Beatles had about 35. So will this Beach Boys movie follow the success of the band itself?…
…or will it be like Mamma Mia! and feature all the music of the Beach Boys (instead of ABBA) in an original storyline? No references to the band; just a plotline that coincidentally uses their music. Okay…
My hope would be for a biopic; however, because of that hope and the winning-formula that was Mamma Mia!, my best guess would be that an original storyline is going to be the route that Fox and the film’s writers will choose. Thoughts?
