Keane: A Brief Profile
Keane is one of my favorite bands. It is a British pop/rock band that started in 1997 and has released a few (really great) albums in the last decade. The band has enjoyed major success in the United Kingdom, and decent success in the United States.
Their first album, Hopes and Fears, released in 2004, is a very original album. If you haven’t heard this record, you really should go listen to it. The debut single, “Somewhere Only We Know” became really popular in the United States and appeared on numerous movie and TV soundtracks. It also made the U.S. Billboard Hot 100 chart in 2004. It’s a great song. Really, I could talk about the album all day. Every single song is unique and brilliant.
Their follow-up album, Under the Iron Sea, was released in 2006 and had immediate commercial success in the United Kingdom as well as in the United States, debuting at #1 and #4, respectively. It moved nearly 3 million copies worldwide. The sound of the album was more somber than Hopes and Fears, but it still captured everything the band was about. It’s nice to hear consistency from a band without it becoming boring.
Perfect Symmetry came out in 2008 and Keane proved that it is still as creative as ever. Though it didn’t seem to be as mainstream in its popularity as Under the Iron Sea, it is still an amazing album. Currently the band is working on its fourth studio album, set to be released in 2010. I can’t wait!
