Kings of Leon: A Brief Profile
Did you know that all of the members of Kings of Leon are related? Brothers Caleb, Jared, and Nathan Followill teamed up with their cousin Matthew Followill to form the Kings of Leon in Nashville, Tennessee. The three brothers are sons of a preacher, and were raised in the American South. They couldn’t listen to anything except religious music, and were home-schooled. When they joined forces with their cousin, Matthew, they left their lifestyle to pursue musical stardom.
Though they have been around as a band for a decade, their fame has been more in the United Kingdom than in the United States until recently. When they went on tour with U2 they received a little more love from the United States, but still not as much as in other countries.
Though the UK recognized this band first as an all-American rock band, we were slower to get excited about their music. They have had nine top-40 hits in the United Kingdom total and their latest album has gone 6 times platinum.
Their fourth studio album, Only by the Night, was released in 2008 and finally brought the band major recognition in the United States. The record peaked at #5 on the Billboard 200 and reached Platinum status, as it has sold over one million copies in the United States alone. The two singles that have been released in the US, “Sex on Fire” and “Use Somebody,” have peaked at #56 and #5, respectively, on the Billboard Hot 100. They have gone on tour, made appearances on talk shows and late-night programs (including Saturday Night Live), and have gone from obscurity to popularity extremely quickly in the US.
The Kings of Leon received their first Grammy Award this year for the single “Sex on Fire,” as the “Best Rock Performance By a duo or Group With Vocals.” They continue to climb the charts with every album and single they release. We can’t wait to see what’s next for the Followill family!
