New Albums: Bon Jovi and The Illusionist
Bon Jovi – Live at Madison Square Garden
I know, I know. This is a DVD. But that’s okay, it still counts as new music because now you can see Bon Jovi, in concert, at home! Right?
This is the fifth live concert video from Bon Jovi, and it contains 25 tracks/performances from a couple of their shows at Madison Square Garden in New York. Though the performances were recorded in 2008, the DVD is just being released now, so it has been over two years in progress.
The DVD, of course, contains songs from the album for which they were on tour, Lost Highway. But, naturally, it also contains a lot of their classic hits like “Livin’ on a Prayer” and “Wanted Dead or Alive.” They also performed Leonard Cohen’s gem, “Hallelujah” at the concerts. Check out the DVD!
The Illusionist: Music From the Motion Picture
I don’t usually listen to a lot of soundtracks and then write about them, especially when they’re mostly instrumental. But, there has been a lot of buzz about The Illusionist and its soundtrack, along with the score written by Sylvain Chomet (who also wrote original lyrical songs for the film).
As I sat here listening to this soundtrack, I was immediately and incredibly impressed by Chomet’s talent as a music writer. Each song, whether instrumental or lyrical (or both, clearly), sounds extremely different. There are unique styles and constant changes in every single track. There’s jazz, classical, Arabian, 50’s-style, and a bunch of others.
On the soundtrack are also a few appearances from a band called The Britoons, who add another interesting dynamic to the soundtrack. Overall this really makes me want to see The Illusionist, if, for nothing else, the outstanding music (and en francais!).
