New Albums: Mariah Carey and Neil Diamond
Mariah Carey – Merry Christmas II You
Well, that’s clever! Mariah Carey released a holiday album in 1994 called Merry Christmas. It produced one of the most famous holiday songs of all time, “All I Want For Christmas is You,” and the album has sold over 12 million copies worldwide.
So now, Carey is back with a sequel to her monster album, and slyly titled it in reference to her five-time-U.S.-platinum-certified album in the process with Merry Christmas II You. She also recorded a new version of “All I Want For Christmas” for the new album. Well done; way to use some good, old-fashioned marketing to promote yourself and your new album!
Merry Christmas II You has 13 new tracks from Mariah. Some are new songs, but most are old favorites that she’s made her own, such as O Holy Night, The First Noel, etc. Her first holiday single off the album, though, is “Oh Santa!” and has been well received by audiences. Check out the whole album just in time for the holiday season!
Neil Diamond – Dreams
Neil Diamond is one of those musicians who will always be a power-player in the industry. He has been consistently working and producing albums since 1966, and has been incredibly successful in doing so since 1969. So far, he has sold over 75 million albums worldwide.
His last album was A Chery Chery Christmas. Typically, Neil Diamond’s Christmas/holiday albums have sold very well around the globe, but now he’s back with a mixture of new, original songs and classic covers. His distinct style can be heard in each one of the covers, too, so that it’s not just a generic musician trying to live up to one of the greats.
I would say that one of the best songs on the album is his take on “Midnight Train to Georgia,” the classic and uber-famous 1973 hit by Gladys Knight & The Pips. He takes a very well-known song and turns it into distinctive Neil Diamond.
