Happy Presidents’ Day!
How are you going to celebrate George Washington’s and Abe Lincoln’s birthdays?? Do you go all out and bake cakes and read scrolls and stuff? Listen to some Schubert? (Although I guess that would have been more Lincoln’s time, not Washington’s…)
Much like Thanksgiving and Memorial Day, the actual date of President’s Day varies (in order to give people a 3-day weekend off of work). It falls on the third Monday of February every year, so this year, it just happens to be February 15th. Riveting, right?
Presidents’ Day became an official federal holiday back in 1880 in order to commemorate two of the most popular American presidents of all time. These days, we recognize this weekend as an excuse for stores to have sales, much like Memorial Day, Labor Day, etc. Until the 1980s, though, stores were closed during this day.
If we were actually Celebrating Washington’s birthday, we would know that he was actually born on February 22, and would have been 278 on that day. If we were celebrating Lincoln’s, we’d know that he was born on February 12, and would have been 201. Oh, no! We’ve already missed it! Oops. Sorry, Abe. I’ll remember next year!
Happy day off!
