Borders Jumps on the e-Reader Bandwagon
About time, Borders! It seems as if both the Amazon Kindle and the Barnes & Noble Nook have been on the market for ages, and Borders is just now coming out with an e-Reader (which they will call the Kobo).
However, despite its late arrival, Borders’ new device may end up having an edge over the other readers on the market–it starts at the low, low price of $149.99–compared to both the Kindle and the Nook at $259.99, I’d say that’s a deal, wouldn’t you? However, while the Kindle, Nook, and now iPad use Wi-Fi and 3G to download books, the Kobo will use Bluetooth and USB. You will have to download a book on to a computer before transferring it to the Kobo. But, what will that add, just a couple of minutes?
The Kobo is definitely not as sleek and sophisticated as Amazon’s or Barnes & Nobles’ models of e-Readers: it is smaller and has fewer perks (such as games and photos of the book-cover you’re currently reading). That being said, I admire its simplicity. People are so overstimulated with these unnecessary devices that sometimes it overpowers their original idea: to be a convenient, digital library that fits in your bag.
I have to admit, at first, I was extremely skeptical about all of these e-Reader devices (including the iPad). I’m a traditionalist when it comes to books, and for me, the physical feel of a book and its pages and its words are more meaningful and interesting to me than the flick of a screen or button. However, I have gotten to the point that I really appreciate these little inventions. Most people these days aren’t as excited about books and literature as I am, and they therefore don’t pick up a book just for fun. With these e-Readers, though, things are changing a little more, and people are getting more interested in reading; I can hop on that bandwagon!
The Kobo releases on June 17 and is available for pre-order now! Oh yeah, P.S. another advantage to Borders: their e-Book Store will work with the Kobo, smartphones, and the iPad. Score!
