iPhone Coming to Other Carriers?
Though Apple and AT&T are in talks to extend their contract for another year, there are rumors floating around, saying that may not happen. The agreement is set to expire next year. Currently there are over 9 million iPhone users in the U.S. and if Apple decides to end its exclusive contract with AT&T, there is a great potential for millions more.
Apple has already moved on from having an exclusive relationship with one French mobile company, Orange. The expansion has allowed the iPhone to be compatible with a lot of other carriers, and there has been a substantial growth in sales in that market.
How damaging would this be to BlackBerry? As of April 2009, BlackBerry had sold 50 million devices across several carriers. If Apple expands its carrier base, the competition will grow substantially. Right now, iPhone has a one-up on the BlackBerry with applications, but RIM is in the process of building and optimizing its app store to be on par with the iPhone. Maybe it would be a good thing for consumers if the competition would be stiffer—it would force both companies to regularly update their technology.
Keep an eye out for iPhone news—Apple may or may not stick with AT&T, but we’ll see next year!
