New Moon Breaks Records. No One is Surprised.
I do realize that the American Music Awards were on last night…and yes, I watched them…and it is probably a more relevant and/or appropriate topic for the SendMe Stage. But really, there are so many awards shows and we all know what happened: people critiqued ladies’ fashion (and the occasional horribly dressed man who chose not to wear a suit and was inevitably noticed for his poor style choice), someone was snubbed, someone won who didn’t deserve it, Lady Gaga was weird, etc.
But now for what you’re really here for. I told you I’d update you on how New Moon did in its first weekend. Well, Twilight: New Moon broke records. Its opening-night midnight gross was $26.3 million, beating both Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince and The Dark Knight. New Moon also slashed the first-day record, held by The Dark Knight at $67.2 million, with its opening-day total of over $72 million.
The movie was expected to make $120 million over the whole weekend, taking a huge step up from Twilight’s 2008 opening of $69.2 million. However, New Moon exceeded expectations and raked in over $140.7 million, making it the third-largest opening weekend in film history. The Dark Knight is still first with $158.4 million, followed by Spider-Man 3 with $151.1 million.
Now only six months to wait until Eclipse! Bryce Dallas Howard is taking over the role of Victoria—I wish it had been her the whole time, honestly. But Summit made a genius move not to make Twilight fanatics wait a whole year for the next movie. They gave the green light to Eclipse before New Moon even finished production, and now the green light has been given to Breaking Dawn as well. But for now the countdown can start for Eclipse, opening June 30, 2010.
