Huey Lewis: “I Am the World”

So now that everyone has seen the new “We Are the World” video, and everyone has an opinion…we can start to look at other reactions!  Even though there were dozens of famous artists who participated in the original video (and many are still alive/popular/performing), virtually none of them were called back to participate in the remake.  As Jimmy Kimmel says in the video, Lionel Richie even wrote the song, but he just took a back seat when it came to the 25th anniversary edition.

So Huey Lewis took a stand and decided to poke fun at the new version.  I have to say I really enjoyed watching this video.  We haven’t heard from Lewis in awhile but we all know exactly who he is (”The Power of Love” is still one of the greatest movie songs ever), and would have loved to see him in the new “We Are the World” video.  Past and present could have been combined really well– but, instead, “singers” like Miley Cyrus were invited.  Wtf?

We all know the earthquake in Haiti is/was no laughing matter–that’s not who Lewis is making fun of in this video, though.  Clearly, he is just annoyed or put off by being left in the dark about the remake of a video in which he took part 25 years ago.  I understand the idea of putting fresh and relevant faces in the song, but as I mentioned earlier, many of the artists from 25 years ago are still very much relevant today.  Actually, a lot of them are still more relevant than Tony Bennett (who is in the Haiti remake).

Anyway, enjoy the video and Huey Lewis’s statement to the makers of the new “We Are the World” recording.  I think it’s pretty great that he did this and even poked a little fun at Willie Nelson (from the first version) with the braids and bandana.
