Old Spice Guy Wins an Emmy
Did you know it was even possible to win an Emmy for being in a commercial? Even an epic one like the Old Spice ad? I didn’t! Well…until now, I didn’t.
Turns out Isaiah Mustafa, better known as the Old Spice Guy, won an Emmy for the Primetime Commercial award. Technically, the advertising agency that created the campaign, Wieden+Kennedy, along with the commercial’s director, Tom Kuntz*, are the ones who actually won and took home the award. But, let’s be honest: no one knows who those people are, really. Everyone is under the impression that the Old Spice Guy won an Emmy, and that’s all.
I think this is awesome! Isaiah Mustafa, Old Spice, and Widen+Kennedy rebooted this company and started an internet phenomenon with this campaign. Just a few years ago, Old Spice was known as, pretty much, the scent that old guys wore. Seriously. But now, everyone’s wearing this stuff because everyone really does want to smell like Isaiah Mustafa in all his manliness. I even have a friend that’s a girl who picks up Old Spice to use for herself. (True story.)
If there really is going to be an Emmy award for the best primetime commercial, then I think this “The Man Your Man Can Smell Like” absolutely deserved the win! I can’t think of another commercial that would have been a better choice…can you? What, the Quizno’s cats? The stupid 1-800-Contacts commercial (”MYBRANDDD”)? No thanks!
Make sure to check out the Emmy awards show (featuring all the acting/writing/directing awards that weren’t yet given out) this Sunday!
*Wow, what an unfortunate last name.
