Okay, Let’s Talk About the AMAs.
Even though I said yesterday that the AMAs kind of aren’t a big deal, I may have lied a little. It seems that people are still talking about the American Music Awards from Sunday night. I can’t remember things in chronological order so just roll with it.
Jennifer Lopez fell on stage. Oh, what’s that? You watched on the west coast? Yeah, well, then you saw what you thought was some weird slowed-down-cool-new-camera-effect as she jumped off the human staircase. That slo-mo was played on the west coast to cover up her gaffe. That’s not fair, you know? I’m on the west coast. I had to see it on a little 2 x 2 video window on YouTube instead of my regularly-sized television screen. Either way it’s still entertaining; you should go watch it. (Also, does it bother anyone else how she pronounces “Louboutins” in her song?)
Let’s talk about Rihanna. Don’t get me wrong—I really, really like Rihanna. She’s super hot, her voice is incredible, her dancing is great, her fashion sense is [usually] exciting and edgy. What’s not to like? But at the AMAs I don’t think her performance stood up to what she is normally capable of. First of all, the song she performed, “Hard,” isn’t that good. “Russian Roulette” is much, much better.
If you watched the show on Sunday, you know that the main event was, of course, Lady Gaga. She performed “Bad Romance” (my new favorite song) right after Carrie Underwood performed “Cowboy Casanova.” First of all, Carrie Underwood looked amazing. But, I feel a little bad for her. There is never any way to top Lady Gaga and Carrie Underwood should have been given a better spot—she is a major superstar, after all.
Gaga’s performance included old-school pop dancing, outrageous costumes, glass-shattering, a burning piano, and, of course, Gaga’s flawless vocals. She stole the entire show with that performance and there was just no way to be topped. I couldn’t believe that Gloriana won “Best New Artist” (or whatever the category was) over her. Seriously.
Finally, the biggest controversy of the night: Adam Lambert’s debut performance of his debut single, “For Your Entertainment.” I’m not going to lie, I’m a Lambert fan. But after I watched that performance on Sunday I found myself feeling a little dirty. However, I wasn’t offended by it. (Apparently, ABC received over 1,500 calls complaining about his performance.) There were people in leather and chains everywhere and Lambert “spontaneously” grabbed one of the band members and kissed him for a couple of seconds. Big deal. He did it to cause a commotion, and it seemed to have worked. If you didn’t know who he was before, you do now! Mission accomplished.
Well that’s the biggest run-down I can think of. Taylor Swift swept most of the big awards but she was rehearsing in London so couldn’t actually attend the show. I don’t really blame her, though.
