MTV Drops “Music Television” From Logo
Well…I can’t say I’m surprised. How long has it been since MTV as all about the music, anyway? These days, MTV is way more known for shows like “Jersey Shore,” “The Hills” and “The Real World” than for anything else. You can barely see music videos anymore (except from 1:00-5:00AM…which is often when I watch MTV).
But why the switch now? It’s been so long since we’ve actually seen the traditional MTV logo anyway, with the literal words: “Music Television” under the more well-known “MTV.” The network’s head of marketing, Tina Exarhos, stated that “The people who watch it today, they don’t refer to MTV as music television. They don’t have the same emotional connection that, say, the people who are writing about [the logo change] do.” It’s true. I know I’m writing about the logo change, and I’m not in that particular generation to which Exarhos refers, but it’s still a big deal, right?
This logo change symbolizes the fact that there really aren’t any music-focused channels (on television) anymore. MTV, VH1…all of their affiliate channels…none of them are centered on music anymore. It’s all about reality television, and that’s what works for them. Those are the shows that are making money for the networks. I get the switch; I do. It’s just a little sad. There’s much more emphasis on “television” and less on “music.”
Granted…the stuff that MTV has been playing lately hasn’t exactly been stellar quality, either. It’s a complicated situation, but the executives at MTV have probably made the right decision. Eventually, more people (aka not just me) were going to start questioning and to start being really annoyed that MTV lost its tradition of broadcasting music on television. Even TRL barely showed music videos at all by the end of its run. Wasn’t that the point of TRL? Actually, a better question: isn’t that the point of MTV?
But the logo isn’t what brought the change. The change of the network occurred long before the crop of the logo. So, really, most people probably don’t care. I do!
