New Albums: Modest Mouse and Gloriana
Modest Mouse- No One’s First, and You’re Next
No One’s First and You’re Next is an Extended Play of unreleased songs from two of Modest Mouse’s other albums, Good News for People Who Love Bad News (2004) and We Were Dead Before the Ship Even Sank (2007). They really like long titles, don’t they?
There are eight tracks on the album and they all follow Modest Mouse’s indie-rock style. Over the last few years, the band has climbed their way up the Billboard ladder until it debuted at number 1 in 2007 with We Were Dead Before the Ship Even Sank. Since then the band has enjoyed being considered as both a popular, well-known band as well as a continually “indie” band, which isn’t easy to do. Usually to be considered “indie” you can’t be too well-known.
Sometimes it seems easy to tell which songs are from which album (for example, my guess would be that “Whale Song” goes along with We Were Dead Before the Ship Even Sank…but I could be wrong). That being said, it doesn’t seem as if their style has changed too much between 2004 and 2007, which I like in a band. Sometimes a huge change in style is overwhelming for me (e.g. Jewel).
Check out the Extended Play! It’ll keep us busy and happy until Modest Mouse releases a new record!
Gloriana is a new country band, established in 2008. In its short life so far, the band has released two singles from their just-released studio album, simply titled, Gloriana. The first single, “Wild at Heart,” reached #66 on the Billboard Hot 100, and #16 on the US Country charts. It sounds like a mixture of pop and country, but more country than pop.
The look of the band reminds me of what ABBA looked like in their prime, only American-countrified. They seem family-friendly on the outside, but you just know that 30 years down the line they’re going to want to write a musical and have Meryl Streep star in the movie.
If you like mixes of pop and country (like The Dixie Chicks or Taylor Swift) you might like Gloriana. Their music is more light-hearted and simpler, though. I guess the word I’m looking for is “wholesome.” It’s impressive that their debut song on their debut album, being in the country genre, reached the Billboard Hot 100. The next single off the album will be “How Far Do You Wanna Go?” and I’m sure we’ll see more of Gloriana in the future!
